Chapter 8: The True Nature of Things

“Where is everyone else?” Cimeries asked immediately, giving Cadmus no time to adjust to finding the Amazon and her small companion in the mists. Although he looked over the golden-haired man for a moment, the question forced him to remember Niccolo’s betrayal and all the emotion lying dormant broke through the surface.

“I…” Cadmus started, panting as it truly sank in, as he remembered just what Niccolo had done to him. After hundreds of years, his best friend had turned into a monster, betrayed him and left him for dead. They were never supposed to fight; they were never supposed to care about who was stronger or better, but this Apocalypse had forced them to butt heads and claim dominance. The retreat into his memories had been enough to delay his pain, but now Cadmus was confronted with a very real possibility.

Niccolo truly was a devil, and Cadmus had failed to kill him.

“There was a confrontation,” Solomon volunteered, stepping forward before looking down at the small man in yellow clothing, who regarded him with suspicion. “It finally became clear that Niccolo had lost his grasp on humanity, and Cadmus tried to bring him back from the edge. Unfortunately, Niccolo proved to be beyond reason. He-”

“Niccolo threw me into the abyss,” Cadmus interrupted, gathering his courage and forcing himself to breathe normally. “I didn’t kill him when I had the chance, and Solomon was dragged into the abyss with me when I fell.”

“Solomon, huh?” Gabriel asked, allowing Cadmus to finally remember that he was in the presence of a stranger. He was about to speak up when Solomon stepped forward and set the end of his scythe into the ground.

“That is correct. In my life,” he started, but the stranger shook his head and put out his hand to stop him.

“I know who you were, reaper, don’t get me wrong. I just didn’t expect to see you here,” he replied, at which point Cadmus could no longer hold back.

“Just who are you? Cimeries, why are you traveling with him?” he asked, drawing a shrug from the woman before nodding at the small man.

“The enemy of my enemy,” she hinted, gesturing toward the man so he could introduce himself.

“My name is Gabriel, the archangel. But don’t worry!” he shouted, putting out his hands in protest and ready to defend himself, but Cadmus was the one to interrupt him.

“I’m not worrying, Gabriel, I know exactly what you’ve been doing. Buné was my teacher, after all, even if he didn’t tell us what was going on until we were already on Earth,” he said, ending the explanation with a forced smile and trying to forget the pain Niccolo had caused. “But what are you doing down here? Shouldn’t you be in Heaven and preparing for the battle?”

“I was discovered when I was talking to Buné, actually,” Gabriel said before looking down in shame. “I wanted to let him know that you had all gotten through the portal, that you had beaten back Michael, but I wasn’t careful enough.
